about

for a large chunk of my life, i was not a fan of the rain. but living in the mighty Pacific Northwest you will either be forced to love it... or you'll to kill yourself.

happily, i adapted and now summer puts me in a bad mood. the sun is out for too long, it's hot, people expect me to go do things outdoors. i call bullshit on all of that. how the fuck am i supposed to watch a movie at 9 PM when the sun is still high in the sky?

but those weeks when autumn starts to tip toe around and drop some rain on the parched earth, on my parched soul... my greatest pleasure is walking out into the dark backyard to piss out some beer and just breathing deep that petrichor scent. let's turn to the greatest, drunkest professor who ever was, wikipedia, to drop the science:

"When a raindrop lands on a porous surface, air from the pores forms small bubbles, which float to the surface and release aerosols. Such aerosols carry the scent, as well as bacteria and viruses from the soil. Raindrops that move at a slower rate tend to produce more aerosols; this serves as an explanation for why petrichor is more common after light rains. Members of the Actinomycetes, gram-positive bacteria, are responsible for producing these aerosols.

The human nose is sensitive to geosmin and is able to detect it at concentrations as low as 0.4 parts per billion. Some scientists believe that humans appreciate the rain scent because ancestors may have relied on rainy weather for survival."

what more is there to say? with spring coming on, i'm going to have to endure yet another summer before i can indulge in huffing the atmosphere again. it will seem like too long. hell, it WILL be too long. but even sitting here typing this i know that when the time comes and the dry earth starts drinking again, it will be orgasmic.

until then, i guess i'll just drink some beer and do some yard work. yay...
